Why Strategy Matters More Than Speed
Raw speed helps, but the top solvers on the Murdsearch leaderboard are not the fastest readers — they are the most methodical. Rushing the grid leads to missed words, missed clues, and wasted answer attempts. The five tips below are what separates a 7-minute solve from a 25-minute one.
Tip 1 — Always Scan Diagonals First
Human vision is trained to read horizontally. When most players open a word search, they instinctively scan left to right, then top to bottom. Puzzle designers know this, so the trickiest words — including sometimes the murder method itself — get placed on diagonals.
Spend the first 90 seconds of every case doing nothing but diagonal sweeps. You will find at least two or three words that would have taken you minutes to spot otherwise.
Tip 2 — Anchor on Rare Letters
Do not hunt words from left to right letter by letter. Instead, pick the rarest letter in each target word and scan the entire grid for it first.
Letters like Q, X, Z, J, and V appear infrequently. If you are hunting "QUICKLIME," find every Q in the grid first — there are probably one or two — then check what follows. This cuts search time dramatically compared to scanning the full grid for each letter in sequence.
Tip 3 — Read the Briefing Twice
The case briefing is not decoration. Every detail — the victim's profession, the time of death, the list of suspects, the location — is a clue. Reading it once before you start and once after you find the murder method doubles its value.
The second read usually makes everything click. The method suddenly makes one suspect obviously guilty, and you can submit your answer with confidence instead of guessing.
Tip 4 — Leave the Short Words for Last
Three-letter and four-letter words like "GUN," "ICE," "ROPE," or "HALL" are everywhere in the grid. They appear as substrings of longer words and in every direction. Hunting them early wastes time because you will constantly misidentify partial matches.
Instead, find all the 6+ letter words first. They are easier to isolate, they clear large sections of the grid, and they leave the short words obvious by elimination.
Tip 5 — Track Leftover Sections as You Go
You do not have to wait until every word is found to start reading the leftover letters. As you clear words, mentally note which rows and columns are almost fully cleared. Leftover letters cluster predictably.
By the time you have found your last listed word, you should already have a strong hunch about the murder method. The final reveal becomes confirmation rather than discovery — which means you can submit your answer almost immediately.
Bonus: Practice on Free Cases First
If you are new to Murdsearch, the free cases (Cases 1–5 in each volume) are calibrated for learning. Volume 1, Case 1 has a straightforward leftover pattern. By Case 5, you will have the rhythm down. Only then should you move into the harder paid cases, where the grids get denser and the methods more obscure.
