For context, the community average on Case #047 is 11 minutes 20 seconds. The record is not just fast; it is in a different category entirely. We wanted to understand how.

The record holder described their approach as "word chunking" — rather than searching for one word at a time, they hold three to five target words in working memory simultaneously and scan the grid looking for any of them.

This only works if you have a strong visual memory for letter patterns. Most solvers hunt sequentially: find word one, cross it off, find word two. Chunking allows parallel processing — your eye catches a diagonal sequence and immediately recognises it as one of three possible matches rather than having to check each word one by one.
